Understanding Common Fertility Patterns in Traditional Eastern Medicine

Mental & Emotional Symptoms
Physical Symptoms

Cold Body Type

Cold Body Type
During the menstrual cycle, our body requires increased blood supply, with hormones signalling more blood flow to the uterus. In cold body types, chronic poor circulation leads to low energy and cold sensitivity. While the body tries to pump more blood to cold extremities, it fails to deliver adequate flow to reproductive organs. This imbalanced circulation leads to a higher temperature in the head and upper body, causing headaches. Though patients try to improve circulation through exercise or sauna, these efforts worsen fatigue through electrolyte loss. When menstruation occurs, the uterus lacks the blood flow needed for healthy reproductive function.
Cold Body Type
Symptoms
Cold abdomen and lower back
Desire for warm drinks/food
Dislike of cold environments
Frequent chills and body aches
Cold hands and Feet
Headaches and dizziness
Pale complexion
Thin or watery menstrual flow
Fatigue and low energy
Worsening symptoms before/during period

Hormone Type: PCOS Symptoms

Hormone Type PCOS Symptoms
PCOS creates a complex web of hormonal imbalances involving insulin and androgens (male hormones). This disruption affects your body's ability to release eggs regularly and can cause multiple small cysts on the ovaries. While modern medicine often focuses on managing symptoms, Traditional Eastern Medicine aims to restore natural hormone balance through regulating the body's own hormone-producing systems. This approach helps establish regular ovulation and menstrual cycles.
Hormone Type:
PCOS
Symptoms
Mood swings
Sugar cravings
Fatigue
Irregular or missing periods
Thick coating on tongue
Weight management difficulties
Oily skin and acne
Hair loss from head
Excessive hair growth on body

Blood Stasis Type

Blood Stasis Type
In Traditional Eastern Medicine, blood stasis refers to poor blood circulation and congestion in the reproductive system. This condition can lead to inadequate nourishment of reproductive organs and create an unfavorable environment for conception. The presence of clots and pain indicates that blood isn't flowing smoothly, which can affect egg quality implantation, and overall reproductive function.
Blood Stasis Type
Symptoms
Easy bruising
Fixed, stabbing pain
Purple-tinted lips or nail
Chronic constipation
Painful, heavy periods
Premenstrual breast pain
Dark blood with large clots
Severe cramping
Lower abdominal pain
History of endometriosis/fibroids

Stress Type

Stress Type
Chronic stress triggers your body's 'fight or flight’ response, which can significantly impact reproductive function. When stress becomes chronic, it disrupts the delicate balance of reproductive hormones by affecting the hypothalamus - the brain's hormone control center. This can lead to irregular ovulation or even stopped periods. Additionally, stress can affect digestion, sleep, and overall well-being, all of which are crucial for fertility. Our treatment approach focuses on both physical symptoms and emotional balance.
Stress Type
Symptoms
Sleep difficulties
Irritability
Easily stressed and anxious
Overthinking
Perfectionist personality
Poor appetite when stressed
Dry eyes, mouth, and throat
Heart palpitations
Tight shoulders and neck
Temperature sensitivity

Dr. Na’s True Story

From Treating to Experiencing: A Doctor's Infertility Story

Five egg retrievals, one ectopic pregnancy, one miscarriage, two cancelled embryo transfers due to insufficient endometrial thickness, and six embryo transfers. This was our five-year journey before my wife and I welcomed our daughter.

When we first received the diagnosis suggesting conception might be challenging, I wasn't particularly worried. As a Traditional Eastern Medicine doctor, I thought, "How many patients have I helped conceive? Surely we'll succeed too. With a little more effort and IVF, it'll happen soon." I had no idea then how many years and tears lay ahead of us.

I immersed myself in books and research papers. I tried countless acupuncture treatments and various herbal medicines. When my patients succeeded while we failed, we would cry, gather ourselves, and start again. Sometimes, when both my patients and we experienced failures together, we would hold hands, share our tears, and find the strength to continue.

Infertility treatment varies greatly in complexity - from seemingly simple cases to incredibly challenging ones. Perhaps this is because some aspects still lie beyond human understanding. Nevertheless, I remain committed to giving my absolute best. I want to share with you that indescribable moment when you first meet your child - that overwhelming emotion that makes it all worthwhile.

I was referred by one of my friend when I experienced my miscarriage. Dr. Na gave me an emergency session before I took the pill, and it greatly helped to smooth the process. Dr. Na and the whole team at Greenleaf were there every step of the way through my miscarriage, recovery, IVF and pregnancy. Now I am 26 weeks pregnant with a boy. I Couldn't have done this without them. What I received at Greenleaf is not just medical care, but also emotional support!! I recommend Greenleaf to every one of my friend, especially if IVF treatment is needed.

We've been trying to have a baby for 4 years. After I had ovarian cyst surgery and the problems were ongoing. I had tried acupuncture and herb methods in Toronto. It was exhausting to continue with this since I did not feel any difference. When I visited my family members in Vancouver, I found this clinic and got assessment done. With the 1st batch of the personalized herbs, I could feel the difference in my body unlike with the ones from other places. I was quite skeptical about the Chinese Herbs since its effects are not cut and clear, but I was able to see that my legs are no longer swollen (which I was not even knew that they were swollen before). As I was done with the 1st batch, I tried IUI two times and failed. After finishing the 3rd batch, I tried IVF (9 eggs retrieved, 7 were fertilized, and 3 of them were successfully frozen). The 1st IVF was a success and I just have birth! I was 32 years old at that time and doctor told me that my husband and I are both healthy to have a baby. While there were nothing further can be done in western medicine, I am glad I found this clinic and met Dr. Na. I was honestly very surprised by his follow up which lasted over a year until I gave birth. Although I was in Toronto, he would call me to check in with me how I am doing with the herb medicine and provide me with his feedback. I can't imagine how effective it would have been if I were able to actually do both acupuncture and the herb method together in person. Highly recommended! God bless.

I started seeing Dr. Na at Greenleaf Clinic for fertility support early in our TTC journey with our first baby. We had amazing support from both Western and Eastern experts and along the way, decided to do IVF. Miraculously, we got pregnant right before I was supposed to start the IVF protocol. I remember sharing the news with Dr. Na and his team, and their joy and excitement was so touching and something I will remember forever. My family and I are so grateful for the incredible care and treatment from Dr. Na and the Greenleaf team through TTC, pregnancies, and postpartum. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

I highly recommend Dr.Na to whoever wants to try acupuncture to support their IVF cycle in any stage. Because it really helped me. After my first transfer was fail, I was very upset and we didn’t know which part went wrong. We asked the doctor from the Fertility Center. They said it could be just a bad cycle and they didn’t know the reason either. So I did research online and found Dr. Na who we can't ever thank enough. He took the time to understand my issue, came up with a different approach and successfully change the whole outcome of my IVF treatment. I remember when the first time I met him I was very worried about my health because I didn’t know I am having endometriosis until I went to the fertility clinic for help. Then I told Dr. Na, he said “don’t worry, I will help you! You don’t have a big issue. If you want, we can start the treatment today.” Then I started my treatment with him, then my second transfer was successful, and now my baby is almost three months. The only thing I did different was I went acupuncture on my second one. I didn’t change my diet or life style between the first one and second one. I understand that fertility treatment is stressful, super emotional and pricey. If you have tried so many ways but haven’t tried acupuncture, maybe give a chance to acupuncture.

Dr Byoung Jin Na is a wizard! He has rescued me on multiple occasions from back pain, neck issues, stress and even fertility issues. I am so grateful for his talents, and dedication to my genuine well being. Highly recommend this practice. Thank you Greenleaf! Xo

I've been a patient of Dr. Na for over 5 years. I've been to a lot of acupuncture clinics since I was little, but Dr. Na is hands down the best doctor I've ever met in my life. He is so caring and listens to his patients. He never gets annoyed when you keep asking questions and express concerns unlike many doctors we see nowadays. Most of all, he is very good at what he does and has always treated my conditions for the past 5 years. When we first went to see Dr. Na, my husband and I wanted to have a baby but I had severe period cramping and headaches along with indigestion and swelling at the time. I knew my body was not in the perfect state to conceive. After a very thorough examination and consult, Dr. Na immediately made a treatment plan for me to recover from my conditions so I could have a healthy baby. I went into the clinic twice a week for acupuncture and took herbal medicine for three months. Then just like magic, we had a baby so quickly. After three years, we wanted to have another addition to our family and just like my first time, I went for acupuncture treatments and took herbal medicine to make sure my body was ready again. This time around, I got pregnant the first month we tried! Even after birth, Dr. Na checked in with me periodically to make sure I could recover well. Thanks to Dr. Na, we now have two healthy and beautiful children. We live an hour away and the trips aren't always easy, but will continue to go see him for as long as we live in the Greater Vancouver area. If you are looking for a genuine and compassionate doctor, look no further!

Leah
This is the best herbal place I have been in Vancouver. Everyone was so friendly and the doctor was super kind. He wasn’t annoyed with tones of questions I asked, he even asked things that I didn’t thought of. I went there for herbal treatment because I am planning to get pregnant. Price are reasonable. I could not find anything negative from them. Very satisfied.

Last year, without high expectation, because I had tried everything before, I went to Greenleaf clinic because of the excellent reviews received on infertility. It is a great joy that I say: I am part of the statistics of success. After 3 months of treatment my dream came true; today I have a beautiful girl of 17 months. Thank you so much Dr. Na.

Georgina
I am having a history of endometriosis, serious pain during period, and infertility. I had acupuncture treatment with Dr.Na for more than 1.5 years. At the 3rd month, my pain was totally gone, no more msp symptoms. After I get pregnant, Dr. NA still helped to get rid of nausea, stomach upset, headache, and mood swings. Thanks Greenleaf and Dr.Na, now I m holding my 2 weeks old baby boy with me :)

Treatment

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most patients find fertility acupuncture very relaxing. The needles are extremely thin, and while you might feel a slight sensation upon insertion, any discomfort typically disappears quickly. Many patients even fall asleep during treatment.

How long is each treatment session?

A typical session lasts about 45minutes. Your first consultation may take longer (around 60 minutes) as we'll need to review your medical history and fertility journey in detail.

What should I wear to my appointment?

We provide clean, sanitized patient gowns at each visit, so you don't need to worry about what to wear. Our gowns are professionally laundered and sterilized after each use, ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and comfort.

If you prefer to stay in your own clothing, we recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothes that can be easily rolled up above your elbows and knees. However, most patients find our medical gowns more convenient and comfortable during treatment.

Our priority is making your treatment experience as comfortable and hygienic as possible, which is why we maintain a fresh supply of properly sanitized medical gowns for every patient.

Can I eat before treatment?

Yes, it's better to have a light meal before treatment. Being too hungry or too full might make you uncomfortable during the session.

How much does fertility acupuncture cost?

Our clinic believes in transparent, fair pricing for all treatments. While some clinics charge premium rates for fertility acupuncture, we maintain the same rates as our regular treatments because we believe that building families shouldn't come with premium pricing.

Treatment Costs:

  • Initial Consultation & Treatment: $130
  • Follow-up Sessions: $110
  • Package Options:
    • 5 Sessions: $525 (Save $45)
    • 10 Sessions: $1,000 (Save $120)
What should I bring to my first appointment?
  • Recent fertility test results (if available)
  • Menstrual cycle tracking notes
  • List of current medications and supplements
  • Any questions you have
  • Insurance information if applicable
Can I continue taking my supplements/medications?

Yes, continue all prescribed medications and supplements. Please bring a list of everything you're taking to your first appointment. We'll ensure our treatments complement your current protocol.

Is it safe to continue acupuncture in early pregnancy?

Yes, acupuncture is safe during pregnancy when performed by a qualified practitioner. Many patients continue treatment through the first trimester to support early pregnancy.

When should I start acupuncture treatment?

For natural conception: Ideally, start 3-4 months before trying to conceive to improve egg and sperm quality. For IVF support: Best to begin 2-3 months before your IVF cycle, but starting at any point can still be beneficial. For unexpected delays or changes: We can adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

Should both partners get treatment?

While not mandatory, treating both partners can improve overall fertility outcomes. Male fertility factors contribute to about 40% of fertility challenges, and acupuncture can help improve sperm quality.

How soon can I have intercourse after treatment?

There are no restrictions on intercourse after acupuncture unless otherwise advised by your fertility specialist. During IVF cycles, follow your clinic's guidelines.

Can I exercise or work after acupuncture?

Yes, you can return to normal activities after treatment. However, we recommend avoiding intense exercise on treatment days and taking time to rest if possible, especially after treatments around embryo transfer.

What if I get my period during treatment?

You can and should continue treatment during your period. In fact, treating during menstruation can help regulate your cycle and improve menstrual health.
